Worship

Two venues provide the YDS community with a range of daily worship opportunities:  Marquand Chapel and St. Luke’s Chapel.

Marquand Chapel is the beating heart of Yale Divinity School. Diverse participatory services there daily embody the school’s Christian worship values and expose students, faculty, and staff to the teeming larger world of the faith’s music and prayers. Committed to ecumenical worship, the chapel has an unusual dual role. It is a place for regular religious services, ranging widely from Lutheran vespers to Catholic footwashing to Pentecostal praise. It is also a space for teaching students the rhythms, theologies, and practicalities of liturgy and worship leadership. Whether a Marquand liturgy borrows from Celtic tradition, or New Zealand, Nigeria, Indonesia, or North America, the aim is the same. The chapel serves as a nexus of Christian spirit past, present, and future, giving students a glimpse of local liturgical possibility, a deeper sense of tradition, and an experience of world Christian solidarity.

Daily worship in Marquand takes place at 10:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, at a time when no classes are held.  Services are planned and led by the students, faculty, administrators and staff of Yale Divinity School and the Institute of Sacred Music.  A community coffee hour in the Common Room follows immediately.  A normal week includes Morning Prayer with preaching on Monday; services of the Word with faculty and student preachers on Tuesday and Thursday; sung Morning Prayer on Wednesday; and Eucharist on Friday.

St. Luke’s Chapel is located in the Berkeley Center, one block from Sterling Divinity Quadrangle. While school is in session, Morning Prayer is said during the week at 7:30 a.m. and Evening Prayer at 5:30 except on Wednesdays, when there is a community Eucharist at 6:15 p.m. and Fridays at 3:30 p.m. Holy Eucharist follows Morning Prayer on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. On Monday there are also Lutheran vespers. The Berkeley chapel choir sings Evensong on Tuesday evenings.
