Jonathan Edwards Center to release major update of new digital archive
The Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University on Oct. 31 will unveil a major update of the text archive of the works of Jonathan Edwards, the 18th-century preacher and thinker often identified as America’s premier theologian.
Editorially tagged and fully searchable by chronology, theme, and scripture, as well as full text, the Works of Jonathan Edwards Online (WJE Online 2.0) has offered an expertly guided research experience in the papers of Edwards, and since its release last year received major endorsements from around the world. The soon-to-be-released version, WJE Online 2.1, takes the archive several steps further by a fully integrated visual editing environment—allowing editors to work online with the text for comments, annotations and references well as incorporating digitally the primary sources—enabling researchers at the Jonathan Edwards center to work with the text of Edwards and instantly connect to the sources Edwards used.
WJE Online 2.1 also adds substantial new content to the existing database. “In addition to our edition of seventy-three (73) digital volumes, highlights of this new release include over 10,000 new pages of previous unpublished editions of various texts, including letters, treatises and sermons,” said Kenneth Minkema, executive director of the Center.
Minkema added, “This new release of the digital online collection will continue to serve our thousands of current users from academia and the church, currently accessing the collection nearly 25,000 times per month from around the world.”
Harry S. Stout, the Jonathan Edwards Professor of American Religious History at Yale University and general editor of the Works of Jonathan Edwards, commented, “This new release demonstrates the importance of online digital text creation, editing and publication—a resource indispensable for a scholarly edition.”
The Works of Jonathan Edwards Online which resides on a next-generation digital and media asset management system, is accessible through the Center’s web site at: www.edwards.yale.edu.
The Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University was established in October 2003, on the three-hundredth anniversary of Jonathan Edwards' birth. The Center grew out of the offices of The Works of Jonathan Edwards, the contemporary critical print edition of selections from the Edwards papers published by Yale University Press. Yale Divinity School has hosted The Works of Jonathan Edwards since 1988 and, for the past five years, the new Edwards Center as well.
