YDS Library Awards David M. Stowe Fellowship to Oxford China Scholar
The Yale Divinity Library has announced the awarding of the 2005 David M. Stowe Fellowship for Mission Research to John T. P. Lai. Lai is a D.Phil. candidate at the University of Oxford , Wadham College , in the Faculty of Oriental Studies. His thesis, “The Enterprise of Translating Christian Tracts by Protestant Missionaries in Nineteenth-Century China,” deals with the activity of translation by English-speaking missionaries in China , including the effect of missionary societies and policies, the kind of texts selected for translation, the collaboration of Chinese helpers, and the financial support. Lai will be on campus for several weeks in connection with the Yale Edinburgh conference in July.
The David M. Stowe Fund for Mission Research, administered by the Yale Divinity Library, is intended to support visiting researchers who come to the Yale Divinity Library to use its missions-related collections.
