Warren H. Stewart, Sr. is the 2007 Hoskins Visitor

Warren H. Stewart, Sr., senior pastor at the First Institutional Baptist Church of Phoenix, AZ, is the 2007 Hoskins Visitor to the Yale Divinity School campus. The Hoskins Visitor is a Christian leader invited to YDS to meet with students, faculty and staff to discuss issues related to the reform and renewal of the church. Stewart will be on campus April 10-11.

Reared in a Christian family and African-American church environment, Stewart has served the First Institutional Baptist Church since, 1977. He was appointed executive secretary of the Home Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., in November 1994 and served through January 2005.

Stewart holds an A.A. degree from Coffeyville Community Junior College, Coffeyville, KS ; a B.A. from Bishop College, Dallas, TX ; an M.Div. and S.T.M. from Union Theological Seminary, New York City ; and a D.Min. from the American Baptist Seminary of the West, Berkeley, CA. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Ottawa University, Ottawa, KS, and is the recipient of the Award of Excellence in Black Church Studies from the Ecumenical Center for Black Church Studies, Los Angeles.

Warren H. Stewart, SrHe is the recipient of numerous awards and commendations from churches, colleges, civic and community organizations, locally, statewide and nationally, including selection in 1993 by The Phoenix Gazette as "one of ten people whose achievements had the mot notable effect on...Arizona."

Stewart is the author of INTERPRETING GOD'S WORD IN BLACK PREACHING, published by Judson Press, 1984 and in its fifth printing, HOW TO HANDLE GIANTS: Sermons to African-American Youth and Their Mentors, published by Townsend Press, 1995. He has taught at Ottawa University-Phoenix Campus, Phoenix Seminary and Fuller Theological Seminary, and has served as chair of the board of trustees of the American Baptist Seminary of the West.

Stewart has traveled and preached extensively throughout the United States and internationally, including a three-week preaching mission, sponsored by the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., Foreign Mission Board, to several African countries, including South Africa.

He served as the first general chairperson for ARIZONANS FOR A MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. STATE HOLIDAY and also organized and led VICTORY TOGETHER, INC., a broad-based coalition that campaigned for a Martin Luther King, Jr./Civil Rights Day in Arizona, which was passed in the 1992 general election.

  • 11:00 a.m. - Coffee Hour, Common Room
