Financial Aid
Yale Divinity School is committed to enrolling the best possible candidates for admission, based on academic ability and potential; leadership qualities; spiritual maturity; emotional stability; interpersonal communication skills; seriousness of purpose; personal initiative; and creativity. To that end, admission is need-blind and unrelated to a student's ability to pay.
Based on financial information submitted by applicants, YDS offers financial assistance that makes it possible for each and every admitted candidate to attend, regardless of finances. Assistance comes in the form of both loans and grants.
In addition to need-based financial aid, the Divinity School offers a small number of full-tuition scholarships with living allowance that are based entirely on merit, awarded by the Admissions Committee:
The Marquand Scholarship is awarded to 10 outstanding students in each class, five M.A.R. and five M.Div. applicants.
The Nickerson Scholarship is awarded to three Master of Divinity candidates who have indicated they will pursue ordained ministry.
The William Sloane Coffin, Jr. Scholarship is awarded to one student each year who exemplifies Coffin's prophetic style of ministry.
The application for need-based financial aid is available January 1 each year for download in PDF format on the YDS web site. The financial aid deadline for admission applicants is March 1, and, for continuing students, April 1.
In accordance with its mission and with Yale University policy, the Divinity School does not discriminate against any person on the basis of gender, race, color, sexual orientation, religious commitment, age, national ethnic origin, political belief, veteran status, or disability in admission to, access to, treatment in, or employment in its programs and activities. Every effort will be made to ensure fairness and consistency in the School's relations with its students, faculty, and staff. Likewise, Yale Divinity School expects that those with whom it deals will comply with all applicable anti-discrimination laws.
