As one of the 11 graduate-level schools at Yale University, Yale Divinity School offers an ecumenical theological education within the broader framework of one of the nation's most highly regarded research universities. This represents a unique opportunity for ministerial formation in the context of serious academic engagement. Students from around the world—some recent college graduates, others embarking on second careers—enroll at YDS to pursue a variety of careers, most in lay or ordained ministries but others in academia or fields such as law or medicine. Three degrees are offered by Yale Divinity School: Master of Divinity (M.DIV.) a three-year program designed primarily to prepare candidates for ordination to the Christian ministry; Master of Arts in Religion (M.A.R.), a two-year curriculum aimed at lay ministry or service, or a two- or three-year concentrated program of advanced study; Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.), an additional year of study, for persons who already hold the M.Div. or its equivalent. Applicants to YDS programs are evaluated on the basis of academic ability and potential; leadership qualities; spiritual maturity; emotional stability; interpersonal communication skills; seriousness of purpose; personal initiative; and creativity. Admissions applications are filed online and, for the 2009-10 academic year, are due January 15, 2009, for priority filing or February 1, 2009 for standard filing. Need-based scholarships and awards based on merit are available. The deadline for financial aid application is March 1, 2009.
