Burlington Criterium (May 10th)
You see the label criterium and you think easy 4-corner flat roads. The problem? Vermont doesn't think flat. For them, crits include a "little" 15% grade hill just to spice things up. Looks like Yalies liked it. In Women's Division II, Amanda WON the criterium, with Marissa in 3rd, and trooper Reilly in 14th (what broken rib?). In Men's Division II, Cam and Ed (29th) rode super tough in a speedy and large men's field. An excellent start for the Yale Cycling Team, and a sign for the next two days.
Mad River Road Race (May 11th)
The grueling 65-mile course over mountain passes with names like Middlebury Gap and Appalachian Gap makes any car whimper. Throw in the 20% grades and many would just cry. But our A-team riders are not normal. The Women's A-team took top honors with Amanda WINNING again (and winning the individual omnium), all-around Marissa in an awesome 4th (for second overall in the omnium), and Reilly coming in strong for a sweet 11th. On the Men's A-team, Ed (43rd) and Cam (50th) steeling it up against the vertical slopes of Vermont to do Eli Yale proud. Hard hard work by all our finishing riders on the Mad River, a premiere site that even the professionals race on.
Team Time Trial (May 12th)
A highway with wide, smooth roads coupled with bikers in skin-suits and space-age time trial machines can only mean one thing: trouble for the Highway Patrol. Of course, the 19-mile course was pre-approved, thankfully closed to 18-wheelers, and ready for some TTT action. Our Women's A team had to flow with their weekend and WON by over 2 minutes to defend their title. Our speedy Men's A team of Casey, Rob, Pete, and Ryan B took flight with a SECOND place in the overall. Fantastic jobs. If you're real nice to these riders, maybe, just maybe they'll give you an autograph.
The 2002 road season closes for the Yale Cycling Team. A successful and memorable season, we humbly conclude. We hope you've enjoyed following the team performances this season, and already we look forward to the next season. 'til then, au revoir... pour ce moment. Happy riding.
