Threatening skies gave way to sunshine on Monday, May 25, as 1273 bachelors degrees and more than 1800 graduate degrees were conferred at Yale University's 308th Commencement. Ten honorary doctorate degrees were awarded as well to individuals who collectively represented the values of "creativity, curiosity, discipline, integrity, and passion for social justice" hoped for the Class of 2009. Those honored included Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton LAW '73, author John McPhee, choreographer Bill T. Jones, sculptor Richard Serra, and Alison Richard, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge and former Provost of Yale University. Also honored were liberation theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez, social entrepreneur William Drayton, composer Sofia Gubaidulina, microbiologist Leroy Hood, and economist Thomas Schelling.

Yale's 309th Commencement will take place on Monday, May 24, 2010, with events for seniors and their guests beginning on Saturday, May 22.
