The student-run Cap and Gown Agency provides black rental gowns to faculty and sells black keepsake gowns to students. Custom Yale regalia is available by special order.

Keepsake caps and gowns are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. "Greenweaver" technology, which debuted four years ago, was developed by Oak Hall Industries of Salem, Virginia. Click here to learn more.

The Cap and Gown Agency is located in the office of Associated Student Agencies, 246 Church Street, Room B05. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to

Ordering

Prices, distribution dates, and order forms are contained in pdf format below and may be printed out by clicking on the appropriate category (free Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view forms).

Students may order online beginning February 1, 2013 at www.yale.edu/sis using a credit card or student account. Select "Commencement" from the main menu, then "Order Cap and Gown," and follow instructions.

To avoid late fees, orders must be received by 4 pm on Monday, April 1, 2013.

Purchase of Yale custom regalia

All rental and keepsake robes provided by the Cap and Gown Agency are black. Master's and doctoral candidates who wish to purchase "Yale blue" custom regalia (i.e., "Yale blue" doctoral or master's gown, faille hood, doctoral tam or cap), may contact the Custom Department of Oak Hall Industries, 800 223-0429. An order form for custom regalia may also be downloaded here and mailed with payment to Oak Hall Cap & Gown, 840 Union Street, Salem, VA  24153, http://www.oakhalli.com/schools.php.

Completed order forms

Faculty should return completed forms with payment or department charging instructions to the contact person listed for the school or college with which they will process.

Students who do not order online may drop off order forms with payment Monday through Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm at the office of Associated Student Agencies, 246 Church Street, lower level.

Completed forms may also be mailed to the Cap and Gown Agency, P.O. Box 202135, New Haven, CT  06520-2135.

 

Form of payment

Cash, money orders, and personal checks will be accepted at the office of Associated Student Agencies, as well as MasterCard, Visa, and charges to Yale student accounts. Please do not send cash with mailed orders.

 

Deadlines

To avoid late fees, orders must be received or postmarked by 4 pm on Monday, April 1, 2013. This is also the deadline to bill to one's student account. Orders received after 4 pm on April 1 through April 12 will be subject to a late fee of $10.00.

After April 12, no orders, including those placed online, will be processed and no refunds on cancellations will be issued.

 

Missed deadline

A limited number of black gowns and Yale hoods will be available during distribution hours at Payne Whitney Gym on a first-come basis. A $5.00 shipping charge, in addition to the $10.00 late fee, will be added to the cost of regalia, and only cash will be accepted.

Please note that degree-specific hoods and gowns may be guaranteed only with orders received by April 12, 2013.

 

Distribution

Attire may be picked up at the Payne Whitney Gymnasium pool amphitheater, located to the right of the main entrance, at the hours listed below. Please bring current Yale I.D.

Wednesday's distribution is intended for seniors only. Graduate and professional school distribution begins on Thursday, May 16. Faculty attire will be distributed from the college or school listed on one's order form starting May 16.

Saturday, May 18* 12 pm to 4 pm
Sunday, May 19*   8 am to 11 am
Monday, May 20   8 am to 10 am

*Seniors wear academic attire to Baccalaureate services, which take place Saturday and Sunday, as well as to Class Day

exercises on Sunday.

If you are unable to pick up your regalia at the times above, please make arrangements for someone else to pick it up for you. The person picking up your regalia must present a Yale I.D. or other valid identification, as well as a signed note from you authorizing pick-up.

 

Return

Faculty should return rental regalia to the point person at his or her residential college or school. All student regalia is purchased and need not be returned.

Students may donate their gowns to non-profit organizations in the Greater New Haven area by placing them in designated bins at residential colleges or at the Associated Student Agencies office.
