Ann Ellis Hanson

Senior Reserach Scholar

Ann Hanson is a renowned, world-class papyrologist, whose reputation as a scholar and a historian was recognized by her tenure in 1992 of a McArthur Fellowship.

She is also a very distinguished historian of ancient medicine and physiology, and a social historian with a particular interest in women's and family history, with such topics as childbirth and widowhood; in all this she has done as much as any scholar to apply the evidence of papyri to concrete issues of the social and cultural history of the Classical world. She has edited tax and administrative documents, as well as Greek literary Papyri, and has published scores of articles and reviews. She has been affiliated with Yale Classics since 1998, where she has been a gifted teacher and advisor.
