William E. Metcalf received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1973. He began his career the same year at the American Numismatic Society, where he was Curator of Roman and Byzantine Coins and, from 1979 to 2000, Chief Curator and Director of the Graduate Seminar. In addition to teaching in the Departments of Art History and Archaeology, Classics, and History at Columbia University, he has taught at Princeton, Rutgers, Bryn Mawr, New York University and the Università degli Studi di Padova. He currently serves as Curator of Coins and Medals at the Yale University Art Gallery.
Metcalf
is the author of two books, with a third in press, and has
been editor or co-editor of four others; he has also written
over 100 articles and reviews. His work focuses on the Roman
empire. He is a Corresponding Member of the Austrian Numismatic
Society and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
