Battell Chapel Virtual Tour
The Windows on the North Wall
The windows on the north and south walls are a tribute to and in memory of the learned faculty of the distinguished college at the time of construction of the Chapel. The windows on the north wall remain as they were originally installed whereas those on the south wall have been moved to accommodate the 1893 expansion of the south aisle.
Commencing at the north-east corner, the first large window bears the name of Benjamin Silliman. Dr. Silliman began his career in law, but was soon engaged by President Dwight to take a position as the Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy and Geology. Silliman, knowing very little about the emerging field, spent two years in England before his tenure began in 1802. He eventually established the American Journal of Science and Arts.
