Battell Chapel Virtual Tour
The towers of Battell Chapel were not complete when the building was finished in 1876. It was not until 1878 that the spires were added. The tower on the southwest corner of the building is furnished with a clock and set of bells. In bygone days, the bells were used to call students to daily chapel and strike the quarter hours of the day. However, the fashion has long faded for such frequent ringing, and both the bells and clock have succumbed to neglect. The original strike bells was cast by Severin von Aerschodt of Louvain, Belgium in 1882. As this bell proved unsuitable, or out of tune, a new one was produced by the William Blake and Co. in 1883.
