The project will involve both satellite imagery and numerical modeling of turbulent convective overshoot at the tropopause. In particular I am intersted in studying entrainment, overshoot and turbulent mixing. I intend to do computer intensive large eddy simulations of convection in clouds using the mesoscale Weather Research and forcasting model provided online by NCAR. To help understand the physical processes involved it will be very useful to be able to analyse satellite images of convective storms penatrating the tropospheric/stratospheric boundary.
