Healthy Streams and Healthful Watersheds: Developing an Index of Watershed Health

William Price

The focus of this Sea Grant-funded project was to develop and implement a methodology to create a single index of health for the Quinnipiac River. By sampling insects in several tributaries biological integrity was determined. For each segment of the stream many physical and chemical parameters were measured to assess what factors most strongly affect integrity. In the same sub-watersheds we administered a survey that develops economic values for each of these physical and chemical factors. The parallel analysis allowed us to specify economic and ecological "worths" for each variable. As a consequence, we were able to combine the models, one for utility and the other for integrity, and create a single index of "health".
