A GIS Data Directory of Social Parameters within the West River Watershed, and a Discussion of Possible Management Applications

Chris Page

A GIS database cataloguing social factors affecting the West River Watershed, based upon an overlay of 1990 block census data. This overlay includes information on age, race and income, density of populations, percent of owner-occupied housing, education levels, number of cars, and means of travel to work. This information helps to better understand and manage human interaction with the watershed. Data on car ownership and use, for example has important implications for nonpoint source pollution from exhaust and used motor oil. Demographics can help us to anticipate how much demand there will be for recreation in different parts of the watershed, and of what type. Finally, this data can help us determine what strategies to use in mobilizing different communities for protection of the watershed. A block group that contains mostly owner-occupied housing and a large percentage of retired persons, for example, might be very interested in pressuring local legislators for river protection. An area with a large number of school children might warrant an after-school nature program connected to the river.
