The Youth Riverkeepers Intern Program:
An Environmental Education Project
in Fair Haven Schools

Emily Sprowls

The paper presents general river education resources and three lesson plans to be used by teachers. In the first lesson, "Salt Marsh Food Chain," students examine oyster, mussel, and clam shells and then demonstrate their roles in the salt marsh food chain in a game. In the second lesson, "Aquatic Macroinvertebrates," students learn how macroinvertebrates can be used to determine water quality and play a game to simulate the effects of pollution on stream populations. The third lesson, "Cleaning Up Water Pollution," allows students to pollute a water sample in the classroom using household ingredients, and then experiment with materials to try to clean up the pollution.
