Community-Based Oyster Restoration: Cleaner water, improved habitat, and more oysters - How your community can get involved!

Jennifer Molnar

Oyster populations in Connecticut are currently a small fraction of what they once were due to habitat degradation, pollution, and disease. Many communities are now considering local restoration projects to bring oysters back to Connecticut's coastal waters. This project recognized the need for public outreach with information to aid these Connecticut communities interested in creating their own oyster restoration projects. The goal of the project was to compile information that would explain the ecological importance of oyster sanctuaries, give examples of ways to garner community support and build community partnerships with federal, state, and local oyster restoration experts, and give examples of funding sources for such programs. The compiled information was presented in the form of a useful brochure that has been distributed at numerous coastal locations throughout Connecticut.
