Freshman Year: Get Connected
Meet with a career counselor
Unsure about your career plans? Simply talk with a counselor about your interests, how they may parlay into career options and about ways to explore them though UCS programs and summer internships. If you already have a solid idea of your career path, we can help you map out a strategy to effectively position yourself to achieve your goals. We also provide resume and cover letter assistance, as well as mock interviews. Find out how to schedule an appointment.

Sign up for UCS email distribution lists
Receive messages about opportunities, programs, workshops and events. UCS Email Distribution lists include Arts & Communications, Business, Education, Government, Health Professions, International Opportunities, Internships, Law, LGBTQ, On-Campus Interview Program, Science/Engineering, and Social Services & Advocacy. Plan a summer internship
Freshmen intern in a variety of fields each summer. Check out the UCS eRecruiting database of over 10,000 internships at https://yale.erecruiting.edu and follow the account activation instructions. Several special Yale internship programs, such as Bulldogs in the Bluegrass and Bulldogs on the Cuyahoga also afford a variety of internship opportunities. UCS counselors can work with you to design your own internship.
Get pre-law advising
Thinking about law school? We encourage you to begin your quest by reviewing the Law School section of the UCS website. UCS offers individual counseling appointments to assist students interested in attending law school. Several law-school admissions officers visit Yale each fall to answer students’ questions, and UCS conducts several information meetings in the spring and fall. UCS also offers pre-law workshops that include topics such as: financial aid, application procedures, letters of recommendations, and personal statements. Every fall, UCS hosts the Law School and Public Policy School fair.
Consider medicine/health professions
Considering a career in medicine or one of the many other health professions? Read the "Preparing to Become a Health Care Practitioner" brochure for general advice on making the most of your undergraduate years. Pre-medical students should also read the "Premedical Studies at Yale College" section of the website for information on your course selection. Information is also available for students interested in non-MD health professions. To meet with a pre-med/pre-health advisor, drop in during our open office hours or make an individual 45-minute appointment. Please call 432.0818 for information on hours and availability.
Learn about international opportunities
International experiences can range from working in a café in Paris, to teaching summer school in Seoul, to interning at the Associated Press in Rome, to volunteering to work on an AIDS education project in Uganda. If you are interested in working, interning, or volunteering abroad, schedule an appointment with a UCS counselor to discuss your goals, the logistics of work authorization, and identifying leads. UCS sponsors the popular Bulldogs Abroad Program, offering Yale students the opportunity to intern in a variety of fields in cities around the world.
