About Block Journalism Internships
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Toledo Blade are award-winning, family-owned newspapers, rarities in this world of corporate-owned newspapers, and they are highly respected within the profession. Past Paul Block Journalism Interns have gone onto prestigious roles at other leading newspapers, such as the Washington Post. In past years, four students have been awarded these positions each summer, two at each newspaper.
Students will be paired with an editor who will have responsibility for assigning the student stories, editing the work, and offering mentorship throughout the summer. Students are expected to perform at a high level, meeting rigorous standards of reporting and writing on demanding deadlines. In return, students can expect to finish the summer with many professional clips and experience at a major newspaper.
Requirements
These summer internships are open to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors only. All internships are expected to be a minimum of 10 weeks in duration. Start and end dates can be negotiated with the employer.
Funding
Thanks to the generosity of the Block Family Foundation, participants will receive a stipend to assist with their summer expenses.
Costs & Expenses
- Housing
The sponsoring newspapers will assist each student in finding housing, if the student desires. The Resources section of this site provides housing resources to assist you with your search.
- Transportation
It is usually recommended (but not required) to have a car because where you live and work may be far apart and the public transportation system in these locations can be difficult and timely to navigate.
