Why Go to Graduate School?
General Thoughts
This question is not as redundant as it may appear, and the decision to attend is a highly personal one. It is critical in making this decision that you ask fundamental questions of yourself and of the process.
- How long will it take?
- For whom am I doing this?
- How much will it cost?
- How motivated am I right now?
- What can the degree do for me?
- What can I offer the program?
- Am I certain this is what I want?
- Should I go now or work for a while first?
The decision to attend should not be taken lightly. Here are some considerations to keep in mind.
Know Yourself
What are your reasons for wanting to attend graduate school?
- "I want to be a researcher or college professor."
- "I don't know what else to do."
- "I have a strong desire to be an expert in a field."
- "I can put off paying my college loan."
- "A graduate degree will give me better job choices."
- "My parents/teachers expect me to go."
Examine your reasons honestly and carefully. Are they logical? How committed are you?
Explore What's Out there
UCS has many resources to help you explore options, and counselors can assist you in examining different kinds of programs.
Graduate and professional school fairs are held in major metropolitan areas, usually during the fall. Many graduate schools also offer information sessions where you can obtain materials and ask questions. You can also attend company presentations, to hear from the organizations for which you might want to work: what is their opinion about deferring or going right away, how are graduate degrees viewed in the working world, etc?
Seek Advice
Two of the best sources of advice are your DUS and your residential dean. Many students also seek out a faculty mentor, and this may be particularly useful if your graduate field is significantly different from your undergraduate major. The counselors at UCS are another great source of advice, and they can also help you to identify other people who are experts in your field of interest.
Ultimately, however, YOU must make your decision. A wise choice can be the launching point into a stimulating academic experience and a successful career. A poor choice can cost you thousands of dollars, wasted years and do little or nothing for your future.
