A University without Barriers
The Rockefeller University is one of the worlds foremost biomedical research institutes, and is dedicated to conducting innovative, high-quality research to improve the understanding of life for the benefit of humanity.
One-of-a-Kind Institution
Founded in 1901, The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research was the countrys first institution devoted exclusively to biomedical research. In the 1950s, the institute expanded its mission to include education, and began training new generations of scientists to become research leaders around the world. It was renamed the Rockefeller University in 1965.
Cutting Edge Laboratories
Today, the university is thriving. Its more than 70 labs conduct biological and biomedical research, and a community of over 2,000 faculty, students, postdocs, technicians, clinicians and administrative personnel work at the universitys 14-acre New York City Campus.
A Unique Open Structure
Since its founding, The Rockefeller University has embraced a unique open structure to encourage collaborations between disciplines and empower faculty members to take on high-risk, high-reward projects. No formal departments exist, bureaucracy is kept to a minimum and scientists are given resources, support and unparalleled freedom to follow the science where it leads.
23 Nobel Prizewinners
In addition to 23 Nobel Laureates, Rockefeller has been associated with 19 winners of the Albert Lasker Medical Research Award, 12 National Medal of Science winners and 13 Gairdner Foundation International Awardees. Thirty-five members of the current faculty have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
