Teaching is one of the most accessible ways to work internationally for a year or more. As a graduate of Yale University, you have the basic skills needed to obtain teaching positions all over the globe. Your teaching or tutoring experience, knowledge of other languages, and flexibility will enhance your success as a teacher overseas. American and international schools abroad generally have a need for American teachers. Keep in mind that many schools prefer certified teachers with teaching experience. If you are interested in pursuing work in an American or international school abroad, it would be more beneficial to apply directly to the schools that match your preferences. There are also placement agencies that will work with exceptional college graduates to match them with internships in international schools.
Volunteer organizations, such as the Peace Corps and religious affiliated organizations provide opportunities to teach in K-12 schools abroad. Many of these organizations will offer a modest stipend and help cover some of the teacher's living expenses. Additionally, the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) operates approximately 200 public schools located in 14 foreign countries, seven states, Guam, and Puerto Rico for children of America's military families. Positions with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) require teacher certification and experience.
