Education> Public School Teaching

The standard route to teaching in a public school is through an approved teacher preparation program, such as Yale University's Teacher Preparation Program. Although teaching in a public school typically requires certification, most states have adopted alternative routes to teacher certification. These programs provide an intensive teacher preparation program for liberal arts graduates with in-depth subject area knowledge. Many master's degree programs also lead to teacher certification. To address teacher shortage in areas around the U.S., several cities have adopted programs designed to recruit and provide intensive training to those who want to teach then place the individuals in schools - typically in an urban area. A list of such programs can be found under Alternative Certification Programs.

Alternative Certification Programs
Our nation is currently facing a severe shortage of public school teachers with critical needs in areas such as: bilingual education, math, science, and special education. In an effort to fill these shortages, most states have established alternative teacher certification programs designed to train individuals with a Bachelor's degree and quickly place them in the classroom. The most successful programs are typically field-based, involve education coursework before and during teaching, provide on going mentoring, and demand high performance standards for program completion. You may want to consult each state's Department of Education web site for specific program information. The National Center for Alternative Certification (Teach-Now.org) offers a comprehensive listing of alternative certification program contacts for each state.
