Education

The field of education, specifically teaching, offers a wide range of career opportunities for liberal arts graduates. Teachers design curriculum and utilize a variety of classroom methods to effectively communicate the lessons to students. Depending on the school, the style is usually interactive, using a 'hands on' approach where students are directly involved with their learning. While primary school teachers are often generalists, secondary school teachers specialize in specific subjects such as biology, Latin, social studies, math and so on. A teacher can opt to work in a private (independent) or public school. Another popular option for those who are interested in teaching is a charter school. Charter schools are public schools established around a specific curriculum or program.

The skills that would contribute to teaching include: the ability to develop/design academic plans, flexibility in managing a group (classroom), desire and capability to work with (teach) those who have different learning styles, solid organizational skills, motivational skills, creativity. Schools tend to operate on a 9-10 month calendar with two months off in the summer. The estimated average salary for beginning teachers with a bachelor's degree is $34,462 for public schools (National Education Association) and $29,484 for private schools (National Association of Independent Schools). Additionally, within education there are non-teaching opportunities including educational research and administration.
