present important artifacts and/or works of art for the public to
view and study. Museums may be organized by their collections (art,
history, natural history) or by their intended audiences (children's
museums).
Possible Occupational Titles
Museum director, curator, collections
manager, archivist, museum technician, conservator, researcher,
exhibit designer, educator, editor, photographer, librarian, photo
librarian).
Getting Started
Visit museums, obtain internships, and volunteer! Education and
internships are both important for launching a career in museums. A
degree in art history is often crucial for a curatorial job in an art
museum, while liberal-arts coursework or experience in writing,
editing, research, or art itself is beneficial for those in the wide
range of support, educational, and administrative roles. Likewise, a
degree in history may be necessary for an exhibits position in a
history museum, and a science degree may be most appropriate for a
collection position in a natural-history museum. There are also
degree programs in museum studies.
