What is Signature Confirmation?

The following article was copied from the U.S. Postal Service January, 2001, Newsletter. Please visit their web site or call the 800 number in the article with any questions.

Signature Confirmation service provides mailers proof of delivery upon request - as well as quick and easy access to delivery information. Along with the delivery date, time, and location, the recipient’s signature is captured and stored electronically by the U.S. Postal Service. By visiting their web site or calling a toll-free number, retail option mailers can access delivery information and request a copy of the delivery record. The response letter contains an actual image of the recipient information.

With Signature Confirmation, customers will enjoy the convenience of verifying delivery or requesting a copy of the delivery record by going on-line or by phone. An appealing cost-saving feature to many shippers because they receive a paper delivery record only when they need one.

There are two options for mailing items

  1. The retail option is for customers who are mailing a low volume of items at the retail counter.
  2. The electronic option is for mailers capable of transmitting electronic files of their shipments and electronically accessing delivery information. There is an application and certification process. The requirements are outlined in the November 2000 version of Pub 91, Delivery Confirmation Technical Guide, on their web site at www.usps.com.

How will I receive the delivery status of my mailing?

You may obtain the delivery status of your mail item by visiting the USPS web site or call 1-800-222-1811. Via the 1-800 number, you will be provided date and time of delivery. Via the Internet, you will also be provided location and recipient first initial and last name. Electronic option customers can also receive info through a daily electronic file.
