Importance of Return Address

The Campus Mail office has received calls about mail being refused by the US Postal Service if it does not have a return address on it. This mail may be personal mail such as bills that you prepared at home and are putting in your outgoing mail at Yale for pickup. If you are one of the few departments that does receive carrier delivery from the USPS, you may be one that mentioned having the carrier actually refuse to accept the mail in your office if it does not have a valid return address on it.

Since the United States Postal Service has heightened security measures, please make sure that all mail pieces being sent from the University must bear a valid return address for identification purposes. Mail pieces that do not have proper identification could be returned. Personal mail must also contain a valid return address.

Your return address at Yale should be the same as your Yale address, but at least must contain your name, department, box number and city, state and complete zip code.

If you do not know your department post office box number, it is available on the campus mail web page at www.yale.edu/campusmail or call the Campus Mail office at 4-9310.
