Job Description

Computing Assistants help Yale computer users with various computer-related questions and problems.

Hours

Computing assistants typically work 8-10 hours per week. However, during the first month of school, most CAs work approximately 15-20 hours per week.

Duties and Requirements

Troubleshoot network-related problems for students in your college
Provide on-site consulting during certain hours in campus computing facilities
Perform routine maintenance on cluster printers and software
Diagnose, repair, and refer hardware or software problems
Act as a liaison between Student Computing and the residential college
Read e-mail on CA mailing lists and attend meetings

Minimum Qualifications

Must be an enrolled student and resident of Yale University housing
Must have well-developed communication skills, excellent problem-solving skills, and strong organizational skills
Must be reliable, responsible, and trustworthy
Experience in consulting, teaching, or tutoring is desirable
Willingness to learn and apply new knowledge and techniques
General technical background, including
- Proficiency with PC and/or Macintosh hardware and applications, including word processors, graphics programs, and spreadsheets
- Functional knowledge of Windows, Mac OS, and Unix
- Familiarity with Yale network services

Training

When hired, few CAs are experts in everything they are expected to support. Accordingly, all Computing Assistants participate in a 2-3 day training session before the arrival of freshmen in the fall. Training prepares new and old Computing Assistants for dealing with common technical, procedural, organizational, and social situations that are part of the job.

Pay

For the 2006-2007 academic year, Computing Assistant pay starts at $12.00 per hour. Those with special duties may receive additional compensation.
