Master Smith is the Alfred Cowles Professor of Political Science and Master of Branford College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1981. He has served as the Director of Graduate Studies, Director of the Undergraduate Program in Humanities, and Acting Chair of Judaic Studies. His research has been focused on the history of political philosophy and the role of statecraft in constitutional government. Last year he organized a conference with Bryan Garsten on "Statesmen and Demagogues: Democratic Leadership in Political Thought." His recent publications include Spinoza, Liberalism, and Jewish Identity (1997), Spinoza's Book of Life (2003), Reading Leo Strauss (2006), and is currently working on a book called Democracy in Exile: Tocqueville, Henry Adams, and Leo Strauss and editing the "Cambridge Companion to Leo Strauss." He and his family are die-hard Yankees fans.

Senior Administrative Assistant Alicia Heaney is an invaluable resource to the Branford Community. She forges the connection between Branford, the Master, Branford, and the rest of the world. She also supervises the Master's Aides, who work in the office. She makes students' lives smoother.

Also in the Master's Office, you can find Master's Aides. These students work for the Master's office to provide excellent services to the Yale and Branford community. Look for them at events such as Master's Teas or any other Branford related event.
