Public Health Ethics

Formerly the "Justice and the Allocation of Health Care" working group, the "Public Health Ethics" working group hosts collaborations between the Bioethics Center and the Yale Center for Public Health Preparedness.

Beginning in March 2005, the working group turned its attention to the ethical questions involved in preparedness for an Avian Influenza pandemic. The working group hosted two symposiums in May and October 2005. The first symposium surveyed the current scientific, political, and ethical aspects of preparedness and response strategies. The second symposium examined ethical questions raised by containment strategies, risk communication, and wildlife control.

After the success of these two symposia, the group changed its name to the "Public Health Ethics" working group and began a project with the Yale Center for Public Health Preparedness. The goal is to develop an ethics module for the education and training curriculum on public health preparedness. During the Spring 2006 semester, the group surveyed the topic of public health ethics, developing a common foundation for this new project and planning for its execution. The 2006-2007 semesters will see the development of various ethics based case studies for public health education. Through this collaboration, the "Public Health Ethics" working group plans to continue to address the needs of the public health community and raise general awareness of public health ethics.
