Up until now, Yale University has not developed a substantial research and teaching interest in demography and population. Demography is not a minor field, and weakness in this area is not a minor weakness for a university with global interests. Seeing that there are multiple points of interest in the subject among Yale faculty, we are hoping that this group will act as a “core” to spur campus interest.

The domains of demography and population studies are replete with substantial and vexing bioethical debates. Consider the ethical, religious, and moral contentions surrounding abortion, which have roiled US and international policies for decades. More broadly, demography brings distinctive perspectives to the bioethical complexities surrounding human reproduction and the extension of the human life span. Finally, bringing with it ethical debates about the rights of individuals to migrate across borders to seek safety or improved living conditions, the rights of polities and states to regulate entry across their national borders, and the rights of non-citizen residents (lawful or unlawful) to social benefits and political participation.
