Bioethics Center Reading Group: Angela Ballantyne

“Exploitation in international research – is it possible to do research fairly in an unjust world?”

This reading group will investigate, from various perspectives, the claim that externally-sponsored research conducted in developing countries exploits the sick and the poor in the developing world. We will cover some of the key controversial cases in international research and use these to unpack the concept of exploitation, specifically the role of (a) consent, (b) malicious intentions, (c) fairness in outcomes and (d) vulnerability in relation to exploitation. We will consider international research both as a global institution, and as a series of individual transactions between research sponsors and research participants. Finally we will look at different conceptions of fair benefit in transactions, including ‘just contracts’, ‘market models of fair exchange’, and recently proposed normative standards of fairness in international research. Participants in the reading group will gain an insight into both the characteristics of international research and the philosophical phenomenon of exploitation.
