Summer Internship Program

History:

The Summer Internship Program began in 2003 as a response to the abundance of requests by undergraduate students interested in learning more about the field of Bioethics than offered in their courses of study. The faculty and staff of the Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics welcomed this request by facilitating new ways for students to share in the intense intellectual activities/discussions ongoing daily at the Center. Interns put this knowledge to use by editing books and publications such as the ISPS Journal and Bioethics at Yale, and interacting with the various Study Groups meeting at the Center (see Working Groups). Due to the high success of this pilot project, the executive committee formalized the program as a foundational component of the Center’s activities. It has grown and improved in the intervening years.

Components of the Program:

Participation in a Non-Credit Bioethics Class:
In 2008 the program will include a series of lectures surveying the field of bioethics, a set of intensive seminars lasting 2-4 weeks on special topics such as neuroethics, stem cell research or care for the dying, and occasional lectures by distinguished scholars or visitors from Yale or elsewhere.

Research:
Summer Interns who have a specific area of interest will be paired with professors and/or post-doctoral fellows who are engaged in research in that particular area. Those students with a particular interest in research ethics will be guided by the Associate Director of the Donaghue Initiative in Research Ethics. If the intern does not have a specific area of interest, the associate directors will make the best fit possible for the student. Interns will be expected to write a paper on a selected topic to be handed in at the end of the Internship.

Outside Reading:
Along with readings for the class, daily reading of selected media (print and on-line) will be encouraged.

Evaluation of Work Product:
Evaluation is done on an on-going basis. Interns will complete a final evaluation interview with the associate directors prior to the completion of the course.

Other:
The 2008 Intern Program is currently being updated to provide more opportunities for our intern class. Information on these exciting opportunities is forthcoming.

Application Process:

Selection of Undergraduate Participants:
Qualified students will have a demonstrated interest in the area of bioethics, either through courses taken or writings on topics in the field such as medical, genetic, scientific, religious, legal or environmental ethics. Candidates will be chosen by the selection committee on the basis of capabilities of critical thinking, established interest in the field, evidence of academic ability and intellectual and work experience.

Fees:
Beginning in the summer of 2008, a nominal operational fee of $300 per student will be applied. Need-based scholarships are available for those who qualify. Please contact Carol Pollard (carol.pollard@yale.edu) to apply for a scholarship.

To Apply:
Each candidate must submit the following:
• Current Transcript
• Letter of Intent specifying subjects or topics of particular interest
• Letter of Recommendation by a professor or mentor
• CV or Resume
Please submit the completed documents via email to Carol Pollard (carol.pollard@yale.edu).
