CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Donaghue Initiative in Biomedical and Behavioral Research Ethics, Yale University
Robert J. Levine, MD, Director

The Donaghue Research Ethics Initiative invites grant applications for research projects exploring the ethics of research on human subjects.  The Initiative was established within the Yale Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics in 2003 to promote such scholarship and to disseminate new and useful knowledge for the enhancement of policy and practice.  Grants between $10,000 to $20,000 are available for investigators to study a specific ethical problem in the conduct of research on human subjects or the institutional review of human subject research proposals.  These grants are available to fund entire projects, or they can be used to add an ethical analysis component to an existing biomedical or behavioral research study.

Interested applicants should send a CV and a statement of interest, not exceeding two pages, which includes:

a) brief background about the relevance of the proposal to the protection of human subjects,

b) a clear statement of the research question(s) you are posing,

c) a description of the methodology you will use, both to conduct the study and to provide an ethical analysis of the results of  the study. To help with this last item, you should consider working in consultation with a bioethicist.  Our program will be willing to assist you in finding someone qualified.

We may request a full proposal following a review of your statement of interest.

Preference will be given to proposals that emphasize analytical methodology, as well as to those that relate to the work of any of the working research groups at the Center for Bioethics, descriptions of which can be found at www.yale.edu/bioethics.  Preference will be given to projects that are relevant to research conducted in Connecticut, research conducted by Connecticut-based researchers, or research reviewed by Connecticut IRBs.

The deadline for completed research proposals is November 30, 2006.  For full feedback on your initial project description, please send it at least three weeks in advance of deadlines.

Electronic communication preferred.
