1. Athletic-Style Clothing
Preferably athletic (stretch or yoga) pants or a loose-fitting skirt & a top that is form-fitting or that can be tied so you can see your stomach
2. Bare Feet
If you’re not comfortable in bare feet, then ballet slippers or jazz shoes will be fine. The dance is traditionally performed barefoot, although some professional dancers, notably those in Turkey, do wear stiletto heels. We don't recommend heels -- they can be dangerous if you don't have great balance, they make it very difficult to keep proper dance posture, and heels that aren’t made specifically for dancing will most likely break.
3. A Hip Scarf, Coined Hip Scarf, or Coin Belt
You can buy coined scarves and belts online or at Casablanca in New Haven on Chapel Street near the Art and Architecture buildings. Don’t feel like you need to buy something really expensive or flashy at first -- what you need in class is something to help you focus on your hip movement. A simple triangular scarf tied around the hips can be great for a beginner.
4. A Veil Optional
You can either buy one online or go to a fabric store and get a piece of fabric that is at least 1.5 yards wide and 1 foot longer than your arm span.
5. Zills (Optional)
Zills, also known as sagat, are small finger cymbals. They are available online and at Casablanca.

Middle Eastern Dance @ PWG is a semester-long weekly dance class with
something for everyone, whether you've never danced before or would like to
solidify your technique.

Hour-long classes will include warm-ups, technique instruction, combinations
and more primarily taught in the Egyptian, Egyptian Cabaret, and American
Cabaret style (also known as Danse Orientale, Belly Dance, or Raqs Sharqui).
Information about rhythms and musical styles, dance history and different
dance styles will be incorporated into the semester’s material.  Class
members will learn a full-length choreography and will have the option of
performing it at the Yale Belly Dance Society’s annual gala show in April
