POLITICO Internships

National Student News Service Internship

NSNS is a nation-wide news service whose mission is to improve the quality of student journalismensuring that it covers the issues that impact students and covers what students are doing about those issues. We cover issues like tuition and financial aid, student activism, free speech on campus, student service projects, governance of the university, etc. NSNS believes that student journalism should be providing students with the information they need to be effective and informed citizens in their local communities. When the Board of Regents makes a decision, or when absentee voter laws are changed, students should be made aware. Unfortunately, too many student publications overlook the issues that have the biggest impact on their own students. NSNS works with student journalists to improve the focus of student publications on student-centered issues.

About Our Internships: Our interns are primarily responsible for the production of the NSNS Newswire, but our interns are involved in all aspects of what we do. This means monitoring news outlets, writing articles, conducting research projects, and helping to build our organization through networking and outreach. General Jobs/Internships Information

Most summer internships and jobs in journalism are not posted online or in internship books; they are the result of unique arrangements made between interested students and editors. For help in finding the best possible internship to match a student’s interests, and for assistance in arranging such internships and applying for funding to help make them possible, Yale Journalism Scholars should write to the Initiative’s coordinator, Mark Oppenheimer (mark.oppenheimer@yale.edu).

Yale students looking for jobs and internships may wish to consult with Yale's Undergraduate Career Services.

Many Yale alumni have expressed an interest in speaking with students about careers in journalism. Their names and contact information are available through the Association of Yale Alumni.

Meanwhile, many summer journalism internships that are posted can be found at an excellent Web site maintained by New York University. The journalism school at the University of California at Berkeley also has an excellent jobs site.

More internships for college students are listed on the web site of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

Students looking for international reporting opportunities can find English-language newspapers all over the world by consulting www.thepaperboy.com and www.ecola.com.

Jeff Gaulin maintains a good site for those looking for Canadian journalism jobs.

Here is an English website that lists journalism jobs.

Nearly all of the weekly newspapers affiliated with the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies accept summer interns, although many of these newspaper internships do not pay. Still, students interested in the kind of opinionated, “alternative” journalism practiced at these papers are encouraged to write to editors and inquire about internships. These newspapers often have small staffs and are happy to have—and publish the writing of—eager summer interns. A list of these weeklies can be found at the AAN Web site.

Ed2010 is an internet message board where young editors and writers in New York post rumors of job openings and publications looking for interns.

Students who write for The Yale Daily News may apply for internships through the OCD (“Oldest College Daily” board) by writing to John Zucker ’76.

Yale sponsors this fellowship for students to design their own summer journalism projects.

For jobs after graduation in the newspaper field, the best web site is JournalismJobs.com.

The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies lists job openings for its member newspapers.

For jobs in the magazine field, especially as an editor, designer, or publicist, see the jobs listing of MediaBistro.com, a Web site that also offers online classes and networking opportunities for freelancers:

Many magazines list job openings on their web site. These include National Journal and Mother Jones. Most small newspapers, too, will be happy to have a poorly paid summer intern to help cover local news. If there’s some town you’d like to get to know better, write to the news editor of its local newspaper and offer your services for the summer. The smaller the town (and its newspaper), the better your odds for success. For general knowledge of the newspaper field, it’s useful to know the omnibus web site of the Poynter Institute. Poynter also maintains an excellent listing of listings.
