What to Do After the Parents Leave: Safety Tips

Turn on outside lights in the evening!
Keep doors locked while you are outside. If something looks strange or out of place when you return, DO NOT go inside. Instead, go to a neighbor’s house and call the police.
Don’t give the children medicine, food or drink unless instructed to by the parents.
If the children are asleep, check on them about every 15 minutes.
Put babies to sleep on their backs not on their sides or tummies to lower the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
If the children are up, know their location at all times and never leave them unattended.
Never identify yourself as the sitter on the phone, instead, say the parent can’t come to the phone and take a message.
Do not use the telephone for personal calls, in case the parents are trying to call.
Do not open the door for anyone unless you are personally familiar with the individual.
If someone you do not know attempts to enter, or if you suspect a prowler, call the Police Department by dialing 911.
Make sure you have a safe ride home. If your employer seems drunk or is acting strange, don’t let them take you home. Instead, call a friend or call a cab.
