Turn on outside lights in the evening! |
Keep doors locked while you are outside. If something looks strange or out of place when you return, DO NOT go inside. Instead, go to a neighbor’s house and call the police. |
Don’t give the children medicine, food or drink unless instructed to by the parents. |
If the children are asleep, check on them about every 15 minutes. |
Put babies to sleep on their backs not on their sides or tummies to lower the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. |
If the children are up, know their location at all times and never leave them unattended. |
Never identify yourself as the sitter on the phone, instead, say the parent can’t come to the phone and take a message. |
Do not use the telephone for personal calls, in case the parents are trying to call. |
Do not open the door for anyone unless you are personally familiar with the individual. |
If someone you do not know attempts to enter, or if you suspect a prowler, call the Police Department by dialing 911. |
Make sure you have a safe ride home. If your employer seems drunk or is acting strange, don’t let them take you home. Instead, call a friend or call a cab. |
