Gilles Tarabout

Gilles Tarabout (Ph.D. 1986, Paris). Lecturer in Popular Religion in India. Tarabout is a senior fellow at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), where he has researched, published and/or directed publications on various questions concerning society and culture in South Asia, such as conceptions of violence and non-violence; the acculturation of Christianism and Islam; spirit and divine possession; representations of the body; questions of iconography; discourses on authenticity; transformations of rituals over time; conceptions of territory. He is now also involved in a research group on childhoods in South Asia.
