NOTE: Several grants, including the Fulbright IIE and Fulbright-Hays, are adminisered through the Deans' Office of the Graduate School. Students who are considering applying for these grants are encouraged to meet and speak with an officer at the Deans' Office the summer prior to making an application.

Japan Foundation (Doctoral Fellowships category)
Fellowships for doctoral candidates in the humanities and social sciences for research in Japan. Duration 4-14 months; applicants must have sufficient proficiency in Japanese language to pursue their research in Japan.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Dissertation Improvement Grants
Grants of up to $12,000 each to support Anthropological field work virtually anywhere in the world; there is no citizenship requirement (because the awards are technically made to the University). There are NSF programs in Cultural Anthropology, Lingustics, Law and Social Sciences (Global Perspectives on Sociological Studies); Science, Technology & Society; Archaeology and Physical Anthropology. For applications that fit, there may be better odds with Law and Social Sciences and with Science, Technology and Society than with Cultural Anthropology. All NSF applications MUST be filed via computer on the "fastlane."

Smithsonian Research Fellowships
For dissertation research done in-residence at the Smithsonian in association with the research staff and using the Institution’s resources. (See brochure/Website for possible areas of research.) Available to doctoral candidates for periods of 3-12 months. Stipend is $15,000 per year; prorated for periods of less than 12 months.
