The Yale Biological Anthropology Laboratories (YBAL)

FACULTY/STUDENT USE OF YBAL COLLECTIONS

1. The teaching collections are available for long-term classroom use. Specimens from the research collections may be checked out from YBAL on a case by case basis through confirmation with the YBAL supervisor.

2.  The YBAL collections are housed on the campus of Yale University. Access to these collections can be obtained via the YBAL Supervisor.  The YBAL is open Monday through Friday during the hours of 9:00am-5:00pm.

3.  The security and integrity of collections checked out to a faculty member or student are their responsibility until the materials are returned to the YBAL.

4.  Use which would alter, damage, or destroy any part of the collection is prohibited.

5.  Extreme care should be taken when handling any and all specimens. The following are required when using the collections:

a. Individuals using specimens for the first time must receive a brief tutorial on the proper handling and management of specimens.  This is required for people using the collections for the first time, subsequent use will not require training.

b.
Clean and dry hands are required when handling specimens.

c. Specimens must be placed on sturdy tables, and foam or other cushioning materials must be available to avoid damage.

d. Specimens must be supported with both hands.

e.
If an object becomes broken or damaged, notify the YBAL Supervisor immediately in order that the condition may be corrected.

f. No eating, drinking, or smoking allowed when handling collections.

6.  Upon completion, please return the collection to the YBAL in the same form received (i.e.. same box, tray, etc.).  Any alterations to the collection will need to be agreed upon beforehand with the YBAL Supervisor and may entail additional work upon the part of the faculty or student using the collection.

7.  Violations of this policy could result in the loss of access to collections for teaching purposes.

The YBAL collections are important resources. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated and will help to ensure that our collections are maintained and preserved.
