The New Haven Green becomes the center of the city’s activities with weekly concerts movies, and special events that draw thousands of people to downtown. In June, New Haven is home to the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, an annual event that brings together people and artistic expression from around the world. During the Festival, New Haven’s theaters, including the University Theater and the Yale Repertory Theatre, and its streets become a creative playground for artists and audiences alike. New Haven’s concert series puts live music on the green every weekend throughout the summer. The city also hosts City-wide Open Studios, the largest open studios festival on the East Coast, and popular ethnic celebrations of many different cultures.
New Haven was an important center for jazz music during the Harlem Renaissance, growing famous as a center for traditional jazz in the 1930s and avant-garde jazz in the 1970s. Continuing this tradition, the city hosts a jazz festival each summer with free weekly performances on the Green which have included such greats as Ray Charles, Roberta Flack, Dianne Reeves, and Dave Brubeck.
The New Haven Folk Festival takes place in late summer and students and New Haven residents gather in scenic Edgerton Park to hear artists like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Nancy Griffith. The rolling hills and beautiful trees of Edgerton Park are also home to New Haven's own Elm Shakespeare Company and its productions of Shakespeare in the Park.
