Frequently Asked Questions

Should I apply as a freshman or as a transfer student?
If you have a high school diploma or GED and you have less than one year of transferable post-secondary-school college credit, then you should apply as a freshman candidate. If you have at least one year and no more than two years of transferable post-secondary-school college credit, then you should apply as a transfer student.

Should I apply as a transfer student or an Eli Whitney student?
If you have followed a traditional educational path, wish to study on a full-time basis, and have not had your college experience delayed or interrupted by more than five years, then you should apply as a transfer student. If your college experience was delayed or interrupted for more than five years, then you may apply as an Eli Whitney student. Keep in mind that transfer students must attend full-time, but Eli Whitney students may choose to attend on a part or full-time basis. On-campus housing is not offered to Eli Whitney students.  Generous need-based financial aid is offered to both transfer and Eli Whitney students, but the amount of scholarship awarded to Eli Whitney students is capped at the total amount of the student’s tuition which varies depending on the number of courses taken.

Can I transfer to Yale from a community college?
Yes.

May I transfer for the spring semester?
No. Transfer students must enter in the fall term.

Is financial aid available?
Yes. Financial aid is solely based on financial need. For more information, please visit http://www.yale.edu/sfas/finaid/prospective-students/index.html.

How much is the application fee?
$75.

When is the application deadline?

March 1.

Can I submit my application on line?
No.  Please note that Yale does not accept the Common Application for the Transfer Program.  Please print the Yale transfer application, and mail the completed forms to the Undergraduate Admissions office.  Please see Transfer Students: How to Apply for instructions on how to submit a transfer application to Yale.

Do I have to take the SAT or the ACT?
Yes. The ACT with Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test is required of all transfer applicants. We do not accept substitutions, and applications without scores from one of these tests will not be considered, except for students from countries where these tests are not offered (e.g., the People’s Republic of China, Iran). However, if you are currently residing or attending school in a country where the ACT with Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test is offered, you are required to take either test and submit official test results to Yale. Please go to http://www.yale.edu/admit/other/transfer/testing.html for more information about our testing requirements.

Can I schedule an interview as part of the admissions application?
No. Transfer applicants are not offered interviews.

If admitted as a transfer student, can I defer matriculation for a semester or a year?

No. Transfer students may not postpone matriculation.

When will I find out whether the courses that I have taken will transfer to Yale?

A preliminary evaluation of transferable credits is made at the time of the student’s admission. Final evaluation of transfer credits is completed when all official transcripts from a matriculating student’s previous institutions have been received. Please note that Yale will not evaluate transferable credits prior to a student’s admission to Yale.

What courses will transfer to Yale?
College courses that are similar to those available to Yale undergraduates are usually transferable. In determining the number of transferable credits, Yale does not count courses taken during high school, college credits awarded for Advanced Placement Tests, correspondence courses or the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests.

What does a Yale “course credit” mean?
A Yale course credit refers to the equivalent of one semester course which is the same as three or four credit hours or four and a half quarter hours.

Will college courses taken while I was in high school be accepted as transfer credits?
No.

Is housing guaranteed for transfer students?

No, but every effort will be made to find housing in one of the twelve residential colleges.

May I study part part-time?
No. Transfer students must attend Yale on a full-time basis.

Can transfer students receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to track their application status?

No. PIN accounts are not issued to transfer applicants. If documents are missing from your file, the Admissions Office will contact you via e-mail.

If I am denied admission, may I reapply?
Yes, but you must submit a new application for admission in a subsequent year. A new application fee is also required.  Applications will not be considered from individuals who have been denied admission to Yale College three times.
