Teacher Preparation Program
|
The Teacher Preparation program assists students interested in teaching in secondary schools. Upon completion of the program, a student is eligible for certification in grades 7-12 in most academic subjects in Connecticut and in a number of states with which Connecticut shares reciprocity. To be eligible for certification the participants must complete the following program: a major in an academic field (or related field) taught in secondary schools (English, history, modern languages, Latin, science, mathematics, art, music) and the required courses in professional education which constitute the Teacher Preparation Program. These last include courses such as Schools, Communities, and the Teacher; the Educational Implications of Developmental Psychology; and the Methods of Teaching. The state also requires that applicants pass a basic skills test or be waived from the test on the basis of their SAT scores. Students interested in teacher certification should submit an application (Forms 1, 2, and 3) to the Teacher Preparation program, which will also require approval from the Director of the Teacher Prep Program. In order to plan a schedule that includes both the necessary courses and sufficient time for practice teaching, practice teaching is normally done the Fall term. Applications for this program close July 1 of each year. |
