Life in the Residential Colleges

Every student must determine the extent of his or her involvement with residential college life. While the residential college system provides a sense of community that, as one student noted, "made it easy for me to leave my family," the system places no limits on members. All students enjoy friendships, activities, and associations outside of their colleges. While classes, lectures, performances, debates, and parties may be sponsored by a particular college, these are open to all undergraduates. The residential college system offers Yale undergraduates a familiar, comfortable living environment, personal interaction with faculty members and administrators, and exciting opportunities for social and intellectual stimulation. The residential colleges foster spirit, connection, and allegiance; they are integral to Yale's ability to offer students the intimacy and cohesiveness of a small school within the vital and resource-rich context of a world-class university.
