Community Service
|
Dwight Hall, the Center for Public Service and Social Justice founded by undergraduates in 1886, is the only nonprofit umbrella campus volunteer organization in the country run entirely by students. Individuals develop new initiatives in response to community needs and provide resources, training, and other support services for more than seventy groups ranging in scope from tutoring to political activism. Recent volunteer efforts by Yale College students have involved introducing elementary school students to physics and chemistry experiments and leading cartooning and writing workshops in middle schools and publishing the results in a journal called Splatter! Dwight Hall community activists address issues of sweatshop labor, environmental pollution, corporate reform, criminal justice, and more. With Dwight Hall's support, Yale undergraduates have founded many significant community agencies that have become a permanent part of New Haven's social service community. The New Haven Halfway House, Community Soup Kitchen, and Columbus House for the Homeless are just a few examples. |
