Please note the following:
- Tests taken in March or April will not be received in time for consideration.
- Only scores reported directly to Yale by the College Board are acceptable. If you have not already requested that ACT forward all previous test results, please do so immediately.
- Be sure to include Yale's CEEB Code (No. 3987) on all future test registrations.
ACT
If you intend you submit the ACT, you should plan on completing your testing as follows:
- Single Choice Early Action – no later than October.
- Regular Decision – no later than February, and preferably by December.
Please note the following:
- Yale requires the ACT Writing test, so be sure to register for the ACT Plus Writing. The Writing Test is administered in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada on all test dates, and internationally on the October and November test dates.
- Tests taken in April will not be received in time for consideration.
- Only scores reported directly to Yale by ACT are acceptable. If you have not already requested that ACT forward all previous test results, please do so immediately.
- Be sure to include Yale’s ACT Code (No. 0618) on all future test registrations.
- Yale will accept the ACT Plus Writing alone. Bear in mind, however, that some Yale departments use the SAT I and/or SAT II Subject Tests for course placement.
TOEFL
Students at Yale must be able to understand rapid, idiomatic English and to express themselves easily in both spoken and written English. As part of the assessment of a candidate's competence in English, Yale strongly recommends the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for any applicant whose first language is not English and who has not received at least two years of his or her secondary education in an English-medium curriculum. The following minimum scores are required:
- A minimum score of 600 on the paper-based TOEFL;
- A minimum score of 250 on the computer-based TOEFL;
- A minimum score of 100 on the internet-based TOEFL.
Please note that testing done in November (for Single-Choice Early Action) and January (for Regular Decision) may not arrive in time for the committee's consideration. For information about how to take the TOEFL, visit www.ets.org/toefl.

IELTS
You may submit the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test in lieu of the TOEFL. A minimum score of 7 is required. For information about how to take the IELTS test, visit http://www.ielts.org.
PTE
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic
You may submit the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic in lieu of the TOEFL or IELTS. A minimum score of 70 is required. For more information about how to take the PTE Academic test, visit www.pearsonpte.com
