Standardized Testing

Yale requires applicants to submit the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) and any two SAT II Subject Tests, or the American College Test (ACT). Note that Yale no longer accepts the "old" SAT I. Also, if you plan to take the ACT, understand that Yale is one of the schools that requires the ACT Writing Test wherever that option is available.

SAT Scores

If you intend to submit the SAT I and SAT II Subject Tests for Regular Decision, you should plan on completing your testing no later than the January test date and preferably by December. Tests taken in March or April will not be received in time for consideration. Only scores reported directly to Yale by the College Board are acceptable. If you have not already requested that the College Board forward all previous test results, please do so immediately. Be sure to include Yale's CEEB Code (No. 3987) on all future test registrations. Your application will be considered incomplete if we do not receive the required test scores. November is the last month in which SAT I or SAT II Subject Tests may be taken for Single-Choice Early Action consideration. Although we cannot guarantee that November scores will arrive before the Admissions Committee convenes, past experience suggests that they will. January is the last month in which applicants for Regular Decision may take SAT I or SAT II Subject Tests.

Standardized Testing

ACT

Another way to satisfy Yale's testing requirement is by taking the American College Testing (ACT) Assessment Program (Code No. 0618). Yale requires the ACT Writing Test, so be sure to register for the ACT Assessment Plus Writing if it is available. (For example, the Writing Test is not currently available outside of the United States.) If the Writing Test is not available, Yale will accept the ACT alone. Bear in mind, however, that some Yale departments use the SAT I and/or SAT II Subject Tests for course placement. October is the last month applicants for Single-Choice Early Action consideration may take the ACT. February is the last month applicants for Regular Decision may take the ACT. There is no guarantee that the committee will receive February scores in time.

TOEFL

Students at Yale must be able to understand rapid, idiomatic English and to express themselves easily in both spoken and written English. As part of the assessment of a candidate's competence in English, Yale strongly recommends the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for any applicant whose first language is not English and who has not received at least two years of his or her secondary education in an English-medium curriculum. A minimum score of 600 is required on the paper-based TOEFL; a minimum score of 250 is required on the computer-based TOEFL; and a minimum score of 100 is required on the Web-based TOEFL. Please note that testing done in November (for Single-Choice Early Action) and January (for Regular Decision) may not arrive in time for the committee's consideration. Test sooner if at all possible. For information about how to take the TOEFL, visit www.ets.org/toefl. Be sure to include Yale’s CEEB code (No. 3987) on all test registrations.

IELTS

You may submit the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test in lieu of the TOEFL. A minimum score of 7 is required. For information about how to take the IELTS test, visit http://www.ielts.org.
