About Yale College

Does Yale award credit based on Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or other external examination results?
Yale awards "acceleration credit" to students who wish to graduate in fewer than eight terms for scores of 4 or 5 on most, but not all, of the AP exams; for scores of 6 or 7 on the Higher-level IB exams; and for A-level results of A or B. For further details see Chapter II of Yale College Programs of Study.

How strong are Yale's science and engineering programs?
Yale is one of the world's foremost research universities. Its faculty of outstanding scholars in the sciences, mathematics and engineering includes more than 60 members of the National Academy of Sciences. Approximately one third of Yale's entering class each year intends to major in the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science or engineering. Yale is an exception among major research universities for its commitment to undergraduate teaching and to undergraduate participation in scientific research and engineering research and design. Can I postpone matriculation at Yale?
Anyone admitted to the freshman class has the option of postponing matriculation at Yale for one year, as long as secondary school work has been completed successfully.

Can Yale students study abroad?
Absolutely. Students may participate in the Junior Year/Term Abroad and earn a full year or term of Yale College credit. Yale sponsors the Yale-in-London program for interdisciplinary studies in British art, history, and literature to which students of any major may apply. There are exchange programs, for example, with the University of Tübingen and the Free University of Berlin, and Yale is a member of the Kyoto Center for Japanese Studies consortium. Students also may enroll in a program sponsored by another American university or may enroll directly in a foreign university. For details on study abroad and a list of approved Junior Year Abroad programs go to www.yale.edu/iefp

How's your pre-med program?
While Yale students have an outstanding record of admission to top medical schools and other professional schools, there are no pre-professional degree programs at Yale. Students prepare for entrance to professional schools (e.g., medicine, business, law) by choosing any one of Yale's undergraduate majors and working with a Yale advisor who knows what is needed to advance to the next level of education. For advice on how to prepare for medical school, law school, and other graduate and professional schools go to www.yale.edu/career

What is the percentage of courses taught by graduate students?
Courses with a graduate student serving as the primary classroom instructor (chiefly in foreign language instruction and freshman English) accounted for 7% of all enrollments a year ago.

Does Yale offer opportunities for undergraduate research?
Independent scientific research and engineering research and design projects are an integral part of undergraduate education at Yale, where students enjoy a remarkable variety of research opportunities. Some are available through the departments, and in fact, many undergraduate programs at Yale have a research component as a major requirement. Others are available through interdepartmental programs such as STARS and Perspectives on Science. [More information...]

What is the average class size?
"Average" can be a very misleading term. Classes at Yale range from one-on-one tutorials to a small seminar to a lecture course of several hundred students. 75 percent of Yale College courses enroll fewer than twenty students; 29 percent enroll fewer than ten. Approximately 40 of the 2,000 courses offered enroll more than 100 students.
