JFK Pickup at 5PM Aug 20th.
At this time, I think most of you are preparing for the trip to Yale.
You must be exciting and a little bit nervous, right?
To make your trip a smooth and pleasant one, we, the new student orientation committee,
are friendly reminding you of several issues.
We have planned to pick up the new students at JFK international airport on AUG 20th
at 5:00pm. We have to rent a car and hire a driver to pick you up at JFK ourselves;
it takes nearly one day. It is unlikely that we can do that several times.
Neither Yale University nor Chinese Embassy reimburses us for the expenses.
We wish we could offer free pick-up to the new students.
However, financial restriction makes it unlikely.
Most of the pick-up expense has to be distributed between those who take the car.
The expense would be lower than taking CT-Limo or other transportation tools.
We hope you could understand this situation.
For those who will come alone, in principle, we can¡¯t guarantee to pick you up.
We recommend you to contact your mentor to solve this problem.
If your mentor or some other volunteer has time and would like to pick you up, that is great.
You may understand it is really not an easy task.
It takes about 2-3 hours to drive there depending on traffic,
not to mention the time waiting in the airport and driving back.
Pick-up is time and money consuming.
We hope that you are aware of this and reimburse your mentor the gas fee, the toll, and the parking fee.
Also, you could choose to take CT-Limo from JFK airport to New Haven.
It is a very convenient airport service, which costs around $50 per person.
You could ask the staff in the airport for the information. They will give you help for sure.
If you want to use this service, you could send email to Cong Huang.
We will try to arrange somebody to pick you up in Sports Haven Station, which is only 10 minutes' driving to Yale.
Those who will come earlier than your housing contract starts have to make sure you have a place to stay.
Housing in new haven is kind of in short. We may find volunteers to accommodate you for the first couple of days, but don't expect too long.
If you have any difficulty, please feel free to contact your mentor. If it is beyond your mentor¡¯s ability, please feel free to write to our committee.
Wish all of you have a good trip!
Take care!
ACSSY
New Student Orientation Committee 2004
Metor Program
Dear incoming students:
It excites us to know that you are coming to join our Chinese student community at Yale. Welcome! You should feel blessed that Yale chose you and you chose Yale. Since this is a place of inspiration and creation, the time spent here will be long-cherished memory!
But it is quite understandable that you still have some concerns in mind about the life here, especially at the thought of being so far away from parents and friends. Don¡¯t worry, come join our 2003 Mentor Program. This program aims to help you overcome the difficulties that you may encounter, to help you become oriented to the environment, get back to the normal study and life, as well as build up friendships with senior students!
If you choose to be a mentee, your mentor is supposed to take up the following responsibilities:
1. Get and keep in touch with you and answer your questions about the preparation for coming here;
2. If necessary, provide temporary accommodation after your arrival (but you are still strongly recommended to find permanent housing before you come here);
3. Provide orientation about the study and life around campus. Help you solve problems with registration should you encounter then;
4. Participate with you in the welcome party/BBQ, which is free of charge to both mentors and mentees.
Please let us know whether you decide to join or not before 07/03, by sending email to Cong Huang, which is the exclusive email account for this program. In the email, please tell us your name, gender and major. Please feel free to let us know if you have any preference for the assigned mentor. There is no guarantee that it will be satisfied but we promise to try!
We are looking forward to your participation! See you in August!
Dear members:
Still remember feeling at a loss when you first came to Yale that summer? Still remember how kind and patient those senior students were to help you out? With the sincere appreciation in mind, are you willing to offer help to the incoming students this year?
If you are, come join the 2003 Mentor Program offered by ACSSY. This program aims to help new students overcome the difficulties and problems that they may encounter, to help them become oriented to the environment and get back to the normal study and life, as well as to build up long-term friendships between new and senior students!
Being a mentor, you are expected to take up the following responsibilities:
1. Get and keep in touch with the assigned mentee(s). Answer their questions about the preparation for coming here;
2. If necessary, provide temporary accommodation for mentee(s) after their arrival;
3. Provide orientation about the study and life around campus. Help mentee(s) solve problems with registration;
4. Participate in the welcome party/BBQ with mentee(s).
In addition to the free admission to welcome party//BBQ, you will surely benefit from the friendship with those new students. We also believe that a good relationship between new and senior students is greatly conducive to making our community better!
If you decide to join, please send email before 07/03 to Cong Huang, which is the exclusive email account for this program. In the email, please tell us you name, gender, year and contact information (preferred email address and phone number if possible). Please feel free to let us know if you have any preference for the assigned mentees. There is no guarantee that it will be satisfied but we promise to try!
We are looking forward to your participation and any of your support will be deeply appreciated!
Wish everyone a nice summer!
