Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan is vice president for global health at Emory University and director of Emory Global Health Institute. His public health career has included serving as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the nation’s chief disease prevention agency (1998–2002). He also served as the CDC’s first director of its National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and as a U.S. Assistant Surgeon General (1989–94). From 1994 to 1998 he was president of the Prudential Insurance Company’s Center for Health Care Research and pursued his interest in enhancing the interactions between clinical medicine and public health. Dr. Koplan is the author of more than 200 scientific papers, has received numerous awards from national and international organizations, serves on the governing council of the Institute of Medicine, and is an elected Master of the American College of Physicians. He teaches at the Yale Schools of Medicine and Management each year and was elected Alumni Fellow in 2003.
